Advanced Behavioral Counseling

Lewis Galway

ABC/Advanced Behavioral Counseling (formerly Addictive Behavioral Counseling) was originally formed in 2002 in response to a need for smoking cessation programs for substance abusers in treatment.  A grant was received through the Salt Lake County Health Department, which was re-awarded the second year due to the success of the program.  Groups were taught in various outpatient and residential treatment programs throughout the Salt Lake Area Valley.
In 2009 the name was changed to Advanced Behavioral Counseling.  In that we also treat various other maladies including depression, anxiety, ADD/ADHD, a new name was needed.  The new name also reflected a more positive outlook, with more focus on the solution, and less focus on the problem(s).
ABC focuses primarily on a behavioral form of treatment.  Various modalities of treatment are utilized, including Solution Focused, Cognitive Behavioral Treatment, Existential, Gestalt and some aspects of the Japanese Therapies Morita and Naikan, and well as techniques from Motivational Enhancement Techniques (MET) or Motivational Interviewing.  Change is viewed as a process, and not a destination.
